PART 3
Mark stopped unzipping his jacket. He looked at me, his gaze softening into a quiet, almost vulnerable expression that I hadn’t seen on his face in years. He took a slow breath and stepped closer to the counter.

“Seven years ago, when your mother was in the hospital,” Mark began softly, “you were so overwhelmed that you forgot to pack your overnight bag. You called me in tears from her room, asking if I could grab a few essentials from home.”

I listened, stunned, as memories of that painful week flooded back.

“I went into our bathroom, opened the cabinet under the sink, and wrote down the exact name, brand, and picture on the box into a tiny note on my phone,” he explained, holding up his cell phone and opening a saved memo titled For Her. “I promised myself that night that no matter how distracted or busy life got, I would never make you worry about the little things when you were hurting. Ever since then, every time I go to the store alone, I check that note just in case.”

ENDING
I stood in the quiet kitchen, staring at the small, glowing screen of his phone. Listed underneath the product details were half a dozen other entries: Her favorite tea (chamomile with vanilla), prefers the mint toothpaste with the green cap, likes the extra-soft tissues when she has a cold.

The tears I had been holding back spilled over, but for the first time in years, they weren’t from stress or sorrow.

In the midst of our quiet routines, I had mistaken familiarity for distance. I had assumed that the romance had faded, completely blind to the silent, profound ways Mark had been choosing to love and protect me every single day. I walked across the kitchen and wrapped my arms around his waist, burying my face in his damp coat, infinitely grateful for the quiet devotion standing right in front of me.
