PART 3
The room was bathed in a warm, low glow, lit only by a dimmed desk lamp in the corner. I stood frozen in the doorway, my hands trembling as my eyes adjusted to the soft light. But what I saw didn’t make my heart sink—it completely stopped me in my tracks.
Chloe and Ethan weren’t lying on the bed. They were sitting side by side on the floor, surrounded by rolls of yarn, fabric swatches, and small wooden frames.
On the desk, illuminated by the golden lamp, sat two heavy-duty sewing machines. Chloe was carefully stitching a soft fleece blanket, while Ethan—with focused concentration and immense patience—was threading a needle to finish hand-stitching a tiny knitted baby hat.
Stacked neatly along the wall were dozen upon dozen of beautiful, handmade baby blankets, booties, and stuffed animals.
“Mom?” Chloe blinked in surprise, looking up from her sewing machine. “Is everything okay?”
I stared at the mountain of tiny clothes and soft blankets. “Chloe… what is all of this?”
Ethan stood up quickly, his face flushing with a mixture of pride and slight embarrassment. “Mrs. Davis, we’re so sorry if we startled you,” he said softly. “We were trying to keep it a surprise.”
ENDING
Chloe walked over and picked up a soft, lavender-colored blanket, handing it to me. “Mom, remember how you told me about the NICU ward at the county hospital where you used to volunteer?
How cold it gets for the premature babies, and how much comfort a handmade blanket brings to frightened parents?”
Tears welled up in my eyes as I stroked the soft fabric.
“Ethan’s mom is a nurse there,” Chloe continued, her voice full of tenderness. “He mentioned how few donations they had this year. So, for the past three months, every Sunday, we’ve been spending our day making blankets and hats to donate for the holiday season. We wanted to make fifty complete sets before telling you, so you could come with us to drop them off.”
Ethan rubbed the back of his neck, smiling warmly. “Chloe said you’d be proud of us if we did it right.”
A tear slipped down my cheek as the guilt of my suspicions evaporated into pure, overwhelming pride. I pulled both of them into a tight embrace, overflowing with gratitude for the incredible young adults they were becoming.
